Purva-agni the original fire and a secondary meaning 'front-fire' or the victim fastened in front of the horse.
This is the Black-necked male goat sacred to Agni, placed in front of the horse, the original fire that is
symbolic of the king or the sacrificer is the sacrifice.  A section of the Mahabharata 3 also speaks of the
greatness of the Cedi monarch, Uparicara Vasu, and describes" an
Asvamedha sacrifice which he performed.

The Cedis formed one of the most ancient tribes among the
Ksatriyas in early Vedic times. As early as the period of the Rgveda,
Cedis kings had acquired great renown by their munificent gifts
at sacrifices and also by their great prowess in battle.
Brahmatithi of the family of Kanva sings the praises of King Kasn,
fhe Caidya, in a hymn addressed to the Asyins (Rgveda, \ III,
s 17^1) From this account, even making allowances to some
exaggeration, which is inevitable in these Danastic or laudatory
verses for munificence and charity, one may conclude that the Cedi
king was yerv powerful, for he is described as making a gltt ot ten
Rajas or kings as slaves to a priest who officiated at one of his

The Cedis are not expressly mentioned in the later Vedic
literature, but it would be wrong to suppose that they had become
extinct for they appear in the Mahabharata as one ot the leading
powers' of Northern India. It is probable that they were not so
prominent in their sacrificial rites, or their political power, in the
Brahmana age as they had been in the earlier era of the Rgvedic
hymns; but there were ups and downs in the history of every great
Ksatriya power in India. .

' Another well-known Cedi monarch of ancient times, Vasu, who
acquired the designation of Uparicara, is glorified in the Mahabharata,
and traditions about him and his successors are also recorded in the
Tatakas This Cedi king appears to have been characterised by
great religious merit. Himself a Paurava, he is recorded to have been
through his daughter Satyavati, the progenitor of the Kauravas and
the Pandavas. ,

In the Adiparvan of the Mahabharata, 1 we read that Vasu, the
Paurava, conquered the beautiful and excellent kingdom of the
Cedis on the advice of the god Indra, whose friendship he had
acquired by his austerities, and who, pleased with his asceticism,
presented him with a great crystal car. 8 Because of his riding on
it and moving through the upper regions like a celestial being, he
came to be known as Uparicara." King Uparicara Vasu had one
son and one daughter by an apsara named Adrika.

An observation of all Indus seals is the direction of the animal in the print,
not the seal itself, a mirror image where right is left and left is right. The
ancient Vedic meaning of Dakshinavarta or right and the seals pointing
right in the print is to profess or an affirmation of one's faith in the abode
of Vishnu and consort Lakshmi (90% of Indus seals). The right side is
Yama born from Vivasvat, he was the farther of twins of deferent sex.
Lakshmi the right side and Shankha on the left Vamavarta abode of
Shiva. The Indus seals that point left are an important clue.  Vamadeva is
also the name of a rishi, credited with most of Mandala 4 of the Rigveda.
He is mentioned prominently in the Upanishads as well, particularly the
Brihad-aranyaka and Aitareya. His father was Gautama Maharishi, said
to be one of the Saptarishi or seven great sages, and his brother Nodhas
also has hymns in the Rigveda. Brahma created Vamadevas, after he
saw, that manasputras (the 10 sages), created by him, are not focused
on creation and instead focused on meditation and ascese. Vamadeva
(Rudras) created lightning, thunderbolt, clouds, rainbows, varieties of
medicines all of which are immortals. They are also known as Rudras as
they created immortals. Brahma then request Rudras (Vamadeva) to
only create the mortals and not the immortals. Rudra (Vamdeva) saying
that they could only create the immortals, stopped the work of creation.

In describing the oblation; 'The wise man should make a meal of rajika' (rajikam paltayed budhah), the same passage speaks of Asuri
as to make into a meal.
The word rajika above is a common name for the Black
Mustard of India. This plant has bright yellow flowers and bears small dark
seeds. Asuri is the feminine form of the word Asura.
